Framing The Problem

THE DIESEL EXHAUST RAP SHEET

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that in 2019, diesel (distillate) fuel consumption in the U.S. Transportation sector resulted in the emission of 456 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas. This amount was equal to about 24% of total U.S. Transportation sector CO2 emissions and equal to nearly 9% of total U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions in 2019.

The ‘New Normal’ in Diesel Operation

The diesel industry has been majorly transformed over recent years due to:

Federal and State Mandates

  Expensive Fuel Costs

  Exhaust Emissions Testing Requirements

  Rising Operating Costs

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)

After a week-long meeting of international experts, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organization (WHO), today classified diesel engine exhaust as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1), based on sufficient evidence that exposure is associated with an increased risk for lung cancer.

OPACITY: THE ONLY APPROVED TEST

Since 1996, the EPA’s regulations for non-road diesel engines emissions have been phased in through four progressively more stringent tiers. Different tiers went into effect at different dates for different engines, but since 2015, all new non-road diesel engines, including stationary engines, must comply with the EPA’s Tier IV (Final) standard.

Highlighted Features

The on-road highway emission tests show that Modern Diesel’s oxygen plasma generator system significantly reduces NOx, CO2, and Opacity (PM) emissions. The system, when combined with a DPF, Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC), and SCR on a 2013 model Freightliner truck, lowered emissions well beyond current standards. These emissions results demonstrate the technology’s ability to work in conjunction with existing OEM exhaust after treatment technologies, to further reduce exhaust emissions, with no negative impact on engine performance.
